Bourns Automotive Division designs, develops and manufactures potentiometric sensors. Bourns needed manual probing systems to perform failure analysis work on packaged parts at their various manufacturing sites, which are each located some distance from each other, and from SemiProbe. So they needed solutions that would work out of the gate, and day after day, while providing consistent results. Bourns chose to partner with SemiProbe and their Probe System for Life platform (PS4L). The end solution was a 150 mm manual probe system with the following features:
A manual 150 mm wafer stage with X,Y,Z and theta movements
A 150 mm wafer chuck
A packaged part holder
A stereo zoom microscope with 7x – 90 x magnification, 10x eyepieces, a trinocular head and an LED ring light
A camera adapter, CCTV camera, 15″ monitor and a monitor stand
A thermal stage with temperature range from 25C to 150C that was specifically designed for packaged parts and individual die
Three (3) MA-8000 manipulators with coaxial probe arms and magnetic bases
Selecting a probe system is comparable to selecting an automobile. Like basic cars, most basic probe stations will get you from point A to point Z, but also similar to cars, probe stations have a vast variety of modules and accessories to expand on basic system capabilities.
What are Analytical Probe Systems?
Analytical probe systems, also referred to as prober, probing system, probe system, are often used in low volume probing applications such as research and development, device characterization, product development and failure analysis. They are typically not used in a high volume production probing applications such as a 24/7 (24 hours per day/7 days a week) environment. There are several vendors that manufacture analytical probe systems but the typical family consists of manual, semiautomatic and fully automatic systems.
